KNOW MORE > The coin

The Venetian gold ducat was minted for the first time in 1284 thanks to the Doge Giovanni Dandolo. The characteristic types represented on these coins are: on the obverse, the figure of St. Mark standing up and receiving the standard by the Doge kneeling at his feet, while on the reverse there is the image of blessing Christ within the "almond". The purity of 24 gold carats explains the nickname of "sequin" that, from 1540 onwards, was attributed to this coin. Some types, as the percentage of pure gold contained in metal, remained unchanged over the time until the fall of the Republic in 1797: this circumstance made the gold Venice coin a currency of great prestige, accepted and imitated throughout the Levant, in the island of Malta, in Slovenia, in Bulgaria, in the Balkan Peninsula, in India and even in the same Italian peninsula, in cities such as Parma, Mantua and Rome.
